Until now, the only language test accepted for applicants willing to study in Canada under Student Direct Stream (SDS) was the IELTS Academic. It is changing from August 10, 2023.

From August 10, 2023, Canada will now accept PTE Academic, CELPIP General, CAEL, and TOEFL iBT giving students more choices based on their personal preferences. These changes were needed as many colleges and universities in Canada were accepting these results for admissions but students still needed to take IELTS Academic for the visa under the SDS category.

The minimum scores required in these exams for an SDS visa are provided below.

PTE Academic

TOEFL iBT

CELPIP General

CAEL

60 overall

83 overall

CLB 7 in each module

60 overall

It is important to note that these tests must be taken in person at a designated center. Tests taken online or remotely proctored are not valid for SDS visas. These instructions are particularly useful while booking the TOEFL iBT as it is the only exam eligible to be taken via remote proctoring.

We are still awaiting details of whether there will be any minimum scores for the modules for PTE, TOEFL, and CAEL as they are already announced for CELPIP General as well as have existed for a long time for IELTS Academic. If you are unaware, the minimum requirement for SDS with IELTS Academic is an overall score of 6.5 with at least 6.0 in each module.
